Retatrutide Get

Tracking what the trials actually show about retatrutide — and where its approval stands.

What changed for the people studied

What do the retatrutide results mean for you?

You'll get the help and harm from Phase 1 and Phase 2, plus the source and the catch for each number.

What are the main retatrutide results?

Here are the main Retatrutide results from Phase 2. In the obesity study, average weight fell 24.2 percent at 48 weeks with 12 mg [1]. In the type 2 diabetes study, weight fell 16.94 percent at 36 weeks with 12 mg [2]. In the fatty-liver study, liver fat fell 82.4 percent at 24 weeks with 12 mg [5]. In the diabetes study, the blood test showing about three months of sugar fell 2.02 percent at 24 weeks with 12 mg [2].

A 2025 review called these Phase 2 findings a large gain over older drugs [6]. Still, Phase 3 results aren't all public. Retatrutide isn't approved. The numbers can help you ask questions. They can't tell you your own weight loss, side effects, or risk.

How much weight fell in Phase 2 by 48 weeks?

In 2023, this study followed 338 adults with obesity. By chance, they got 1, 4, 8, or 12 mg each week, or a placebo containing no retatrutide. Each shot went beneath the skin for 48 weeks [1].

Average weight change at 48 weeks was:

  • 1 mg: down 8.7 percent.
  • 4 mg: down 17.3 percent.
  • 8 mg: down 22.8 percent.
  • 12 mg: down 24.2 percent.
  • Placebo: down 2.1 percent [1].

Nausea and bowel problems were common: vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. At 12 mg, side effects made 18 percent quit. Resting pulse rose about 5–7 beats a minute at the top amount and peaked near week 24. There were no deaths. Grave low blood sugar didn't occur [1].

A 2025 review called the 24.2 percent drop at 48 weeks the largest seen at this stage for a weight-loss drug [6]. A 2026 review said no one knows how long the benefit lasts after stopping [13]. Your own loss could be much less.

How much weight fell in Phase 2 by 48 weeks?

What changed in Phase 2 for type 2 diabetes by 36 weeks?

In 2023, this Phase 2 study followed 281 adults with type 2 diabetes who took other medicine. Their weekly shot rose in steps to 1, 4, 8, or 12 mg. The study lasted 36 weeks [2].

At 12 mg, the blood test showing about three months of sugar fell 2.02 percent by 24 weeks. The placebo group had a 0.01 percent fall. By 36 weeks, weight fell 16.94 percent with retatrutide and 3.00 percent with placebo. Both results came from 12 mg, and each 12 mg result is set against placebo. Mild or fair gut trouble affected 35 percent. There were no deaths. Grave low blood sugar didn't occur [2].

In 2026, a Phase 3 study also found lower blood sugar and weight when retatrutide was used alone for type 2 diabetes. Most side effects were mild or fair gut trouble. Grave low blood sugar didn't occur [12]. Your doctor would still need to read your blood tests.

How much did liver fat fall in Phase 2 by 48 weeks?

In 2024, this study followed 98 people whose weight was high for their height. Each had at least 10 percent liver fat measured by a special scan and no type 2 diabetes. Weekly amounts were 1, 4, 8, or 12 mg for 48 weeks [5].

Liver fat changed this much by 24 weeks:

  • 1 mg: down 42.9 percent.
  • 4 mg: down 57.0 percent.
  • 8 mg: down 81.4 percent.
  • 12 mg: down 82.4 percent.
  • Placebo: up 0.3 percent [5].

At 12 mg, 86 percent reached a normal liver-fat level below 5 percent by week 24. The drop reached 86.0 percent by week 48 [5]. No one had type 2 diabetes, so better blood sugar can't explain all the liver change. You'd need your doctor to judge what the scan means for you.

What did the first safety test find after 12 weeks?

In 2022, 72 adults with type 2 diabetes joined [4]. Amounts rose weekly.

  • After 6 days, half the drug had cleared.
  • At the top amount, weight loss beat placebo by 8.96 kilograms in 12 weeks, and the 6.75 to 11.16 kilogram span shows the doubt around that 90% confidence estimate for you to keep in mind.
  • At 3 mg, blood sugar fell 2.8 millimoles per liter. For you, that's a fall, not a goal for your care.
  • Side effects hit 63 percent, mostly as gut trouble.
  • The safety result allowed Phase 2 work [4]. You'd still need your doctor to read these findings.

What did close-up lab pictures tell us?

In 2024, scientists took close-up pictures of retatrutide at cell spots used by three hormones [3]. Lab tests showed that the drug could copy all three hormone jobs, though not with the same strength [3]. The hunger-and-sugar hormone is called GLP-1. Another helps insulin after food. The third may raise energy use. A second 2024 review said the three jobs could help explain the weight result [15]. Lab pictures can't tell you what your scale would show.

What must Phase 3 still prove?

Phase 3 must show whether early results hold in more people. The TRIUMPH-1 obesity study hasn't published its main findings [7]. TRIUMPH-3, for people with heart disease, is still running [8]. The heart-and-kidney study and direct test against tirzepatide are also running [9][10].

For now, the best full weight results come from Phase 2. They look strong, but they're still Phase 2 findings. One more Phase 2 result can't replace a larger check. Phase 3 may back them up, find a rare harm, or change the size of the benefit. You still don't have an answer for your own body.
